Was wondering if anybody hunted here this last year, particularly Unit 61. A couple years ago the number of grizzly sightings and attacks was crazy in Island Park, and in the Greater Yellowstone area. But last year I didn't see as many reports. Maybe I wasn't paying attention. I would like to hear from you if you hunted there, and how many griz you spooked.
Sounds like IF&G is making it clear that they think the griz have recovered, and that management should be placed back into the hands of the state.

I hunted unit 61 exclusively for elk the past 2 years - and from my experience there are a fair number of grizzlies in that neck of the woods, but not as many as some hunters prone to hyperbole would like to say. I've always heard stories about grizzlies like crazy here and there, but in all my time hunting in units 61 & 60, I've only had 1 grizzly encounter. Granted I try to avoid the areas widely known to be grizzly strongholds, but I do hunt in a couple areas known as such. It seems to me a lot of guys would like to make you think there are grizzlies behind every tree for conversations' sake. I was excited to see the IDFG position on grizzlies posted recently - their population is definitely recovered in my opinion and I think the state can do a better job managing them hands down.

Nice. 61 is definitely a fun area to hunt. Can't hardly beat the scenery there as well. But it's been a few years since I've hunted there. I never ran into any grizzlies, but after all the reports the last couple years I wondered how much of it was hyperbole. Thanks for your answer.
