Well - I finally made it out sturgeon fishing for the first time in my life over the weekend. I've been wanting to do it for years and finally pulled the trigger on a few hundreds of dollars in equipment and called in a few favors with a friend that new the ropes. One thing is for sure - hooking a sturgeon is nothing like hooking a trout. I'm still somewhat unsure what I'm feeling for and when to set. Either way - I did hook 2 and lost them both, but not before I seriously reconsidered why I would set the hook on such a GIGANTIC fish in the first place! What a rush! I fought one in heavy current for a short time before the hook pulled out - and WOW. That first run after a hook set will make you wonder what in the he** you were thinking in the first place. What a fish! I hope to head out in the next week or two again - as soon as I get my boat motor running!
Let's hear the stories - has anyone else had some luck or heartbreak with these prehistoric monsters?

Sounds like you have a good mentor. Look forward to the pics soon!
I've never fished for them, but a buddy of mine is starting out on them now as well over on the Willamette River in Oregon. His experiences sound exactly the same as yours. It's a totally different ball game setting the hooks on those jokers.
