First of all, I love the Idahoman website and I check it far too often while at work. Let me take a quick second to introduce myself. I'm a Boise born and bred Idahoan who hoots and hollers for Boise State whenever the chance presents itself. You see, I had to move to private land Texas after getting my degree to start my career. I represent the great state of Idaho with my potatoe BSU hat and pictures from various past outdoor adventures. I miss the mountains, trout streams, and cold frosty fall mornings. I would rate myself as a novice hunter. I've only done a little hunting throughout my life and they were mainly youth hunts from my childhood. My father and I picked up the sport together, and whenever I think I know something about the animals I'm pursuing, mother nature has its way of making me feel pretty stupid. Luckily I purchased a lifetime hunting license before departing the homeland, and that leads me to my next point.
I'll be in Boise, visiting family for the holidays this December and I really want to get out and do some hunting. I'll be in town from the 22nd until January 3rd. Last December I just trudged the piney foothills looking for grouse, but this year I'd love to get a wolf tag. Of course I'll be busy the 24th, 25th, and the 31st and 1st... but the rest of the time my schedule is wide open.
Since I live in Texas I've gotten zero time to do any scouting at all, that's were my questions come in. Those of you that had the great priveledge of getting out recently, let me know of any wolf sightings or advice you have. Of course I don't want my tag to go to waste, I'd love to fill it, so any advice or leads will be greatly appreciated. I'll also be in the Boise area, and would prefer to hunt within 2 hours from home, but I'm not afraid of hiking, or trudging in the snow for half the day. I actually look forward to it, I need to get out and fill my canteen.
I have never hunted wolves. I've seen one in the wild while elk hunting in unit 58 a few years ago, but that's it. Have you had any sucess calling? If so, do you just howl or do you mix it up with coyote howls and elk calls? Any call recommendations? Or is wolf hunting more of a spot and stalk? I would assume they would be constantly on the move, and I should probably locate some elk to better my chances of seeing some wolves.
My plan as of now is to hit up the hills behind Lucky Peak reservoir. My family and I usually sled down the lake bed when there's snow on the ground. When there's a few inches of snow, I've seen a few elk herds in the area.
If you want to tag along or if you were already going around that time and want a hunting buddy send me a pm. Even if your a Vandal fan, we can get along and fill our wolf tags. Thank you in advance for you help and insights.
