Greetings All - newbie to the site, US Air Force retired (2005) & stayed on as a US Federal civilian employee living/working in Germany since my AF retirement. Last five/5 hunting excursions have been to African, plains game, been a hoot - but I have re-energized myself to the great hunting opportunities in North American!
Have a High School chum living/working in Boise the last 10-yrs & he's connected to a small group of hunters. I plan to make the loooong journey back to U.S. this October for a "mixed bag" ID hunt ... I like adventure; already suggested a raft trip into some back-country i.e. basic river access NOT river w/ rapids access OR bush plane into 20A, 26 or 27.
WELL, received a "luke-warm" at best reception from the group on the idea - bummer!? Here's my ID challenge - we have a four/4 group, myself a realist but likes an adventure & my new ID buddies who have come accustom to Unit 22, easy logging road access, trail head camp i.e. campers, BBQ, finger tips eats/drinks, & Cow Elk meat hunting.
IF filling the freezer = goal/great set-up! IF trophy hunting is the goal w/ some flare & mixed bag opportunity - Elk, Muley & Bear ... I'm not convinced, hunting within 1-mile base camp i.e. the road in 22 is the best adventurous hunt plan!?
As a Non-Res, Unit 22 allows Unlimited Bull late Oct, forkie Muley & Bear Controlled Draw = 1 out of 3. However, Unit 23 allows Bull, Antlered Muley & Bear, starting mid Oct = 3 out 3. That is the mixed bag opportunity I'm after - been on ID F&G Hunt Planner, Google Earth, & mapping out Unit 23.
Challenge: Gotta convince the group - 23 offers the trophy mixed bag over 22 & the little extra effort i.e. hiking in would be worth it! Unit 23 has allot less road access than 22, that is a good thing for the hiking hunter, distance from road to spike camp must be realistic for healthy 50-yrs.
Greatly appreciate - a "good starting point" for me to continue my mapping/planning. Did ping an e-mail to the ID F&G office for SW Region, similar req. for starting point, no response. They probably receive 100's of those e-mail annually from Non-Res.
Thanks in advance! Jaegger

Great questions and welcome to the forum! I am with you - I would rather go for the adventure somewhere in the steep and rugged wilderness. And I think I also agree with you that I would rather get back into Unit 23 than Unit 22. You are right, there is more opportunity in Unit 23 for trophy animals. But the quality of the hunt experience for me is to get away from other hunters in challenging country. Challenging doesn't need to be vertical cliffs to climb and ruggedness. It can mean other things as well. But there has to be some sort of adventure that separates it from terrain that is more uniform and boring. There are areas of NW Unit 23 that offer that. Unit 23 has some good forest service roads that will get you to a certain point, then you can hike in for a spike camp and be at the doorstep of hunting some challenging country. So I am with you - I would try to talk them out of Unit 22.
Have you looked at the hunting statistics? I wonder if you could persuade them to switch to 23 if the odds of harvesting an elk/buck/bear are higher there.

Hello Admin -
Thx for reply! New member to Idaho Man, really enjoy the read, so when I dropped my 1st forum tread - "pulse check" on unit 23 over 22. I was unaware, I equally had to establish a log-in for the Forum so when it posted as "guest" ... my 1st thought damn, the group thinks I'm just phishing for hunt'in honey hole Intel!?"
Actually, furthest from the truth as I hope over-time to equally contribute my hunt trips/experiences w/ the forum ... I can, on PG in Africa but not yet on ID!
Why I posted a similar inquiry but as a Member ... wow, ID offers a diverse hunting opportunity w/ decent non-res tag & because of that diversity it's like throwing a velcro ball against wall map & where it sticks - hunt!
Few States boost that reputation so thanx for narrowing down 23 to a region = homework begins!
Yea, 23 overall stat's are lower than 22 BUT only in the eye of the beholder. Stat's are important but only if you know how to apply w/ equality from Unit to Unit. So, 23 lower on Mature Bull vs 22 but 23 equally has less hunters & probably because significantly less logging roads for the "elk walked into my scope" successful hunters.
My humble opinion - a 23 hunter willing to hike in where back end of the area is roadless & stays to hike/glass can double your odds vs. 22 hunter on Mature Bull. Comes down to 22 maze of logging roads & true remote comfort zones for Mature Bulls which Enjoy their solitary majority of the year.
Kwell - we enjoy the same wilderness outing ie hunt experience but notching a tag is the ultimate goal ... born/hunt raised in ND, "trekking mountains" w/ success is not my forte! My early Air Force years in 1980's & hunt'in UT & NM were eye opening with NO hand-held GPS back then!
Getting in high on a logging road, hiking in 3-miles for spike w/ around 1,000 ft vertical climb is my max-point! Thx again w/ the advise & now starts my homework
Ciao!

Thanks for joining the forum! You are right - the homework begins. I am pretty confident that a good, quality hunting experience can be had, even in areas with lots of roads/hunters, if you aren't afraid to go anywhere, and you dial in those places on the map where others generally won't go (which is where smart, big bulls like to hang out).
Stats are helpful to me as data that helps me understand the general health of the herd in an area. I like to notice which units are getting lots of spikes harvested vrs. 6+ pointers that are harvested. If a lot of spikes are getting killed, it generally means that it's tougher to find the mature bulls.
Keep us posted on your homework. We'd be happy to help if you have any questions.

Hello Admin/Forum! Just finished reading over your McCall Elk Zone review & yea, gotta separate myself from the roadways. I enjoy the IF&G Hunt Planner/Map Center, plus, Google Earth to display potential hunting spots & maybe a honey-hole!?
Scanned NW areas of Unit 23, plan to be in there for Zone B Elk tag, plus, mulie, bear/wolf tag in my pocket. A look at my homework to date & hopefully someone has had "eyes on" these areas & can share any hike-in/access Do's & Don'ts.
Done my topo research so I know more/less the elevation changes but nothing beats personal experience.
1. Pollock Mtn: access the SE corner via Boulder Creek road, spike on a Eastern spot, West & North valley's have promise & East w/ some private. 2. Echlos Mtn, access from Black Lake road, & hike past to Twin Lakes for spike, unique drainage between Echols & North Star Butte I dubbed "the cross" & I like the Northern end of the drainage w/ promise. Rapid River running the center. 3. Pyramind Mtn: access?? Nice lake cluster Dog, Slide Rock, Horse Heaven & quality remote valleys/drainage's 4. Rapid River: anyone have experience IF this waterway? Run true to name "rapids?" Accessed via canoe?
Another area in the far NW corner of the Unit ...
Thx in advance!

When I get some time I'll look these places over on the maps. Hopefully someone with some personal experience will chime in!
