Greetings All - newbie to the site, US Air Force retired (2005) & stayed on as a US Federal civilian employee living/working in Germany since my AF retirement. Last five/5 hunting excursions have been to African, plains game, been a hoot - but I have re-energized myself to the great hunting opportunities in North American!
Have a High School chum living/working in Boise the last 10-yrs & he's connected to a small group of hunters. I plan to make the loooong journey back to U.S. this October for a "mixed bag" ID hunt ... I like adventure; already suggested a raft trip into some back-country i.e. basic river access NOT river w/ rapids access OR bush plane into 20A, 26 or 27.
WELL, received a "luke-warm" at best reception from the group on the idea - bummer!? Here's my ID challenge - we have a four/4 group, myself a realist but likes an adventure & my new ID buddies who have come accustom to Unit 22, easy logging road access, trail head camp i.e. campers, BBQ, finger tips eats/drinks, & Cow Elk meat hunting.
IF filling the freezer = goal/great set-up! IF trophy hunting is the goal w/ some flare & mixed bag opportunity - Elk, Muley & Bear ... I'm not convinced, hunting within 1-mile base camp i.e. the road in 22 is the best adventurous hunt plan!?
As a Non-Res, Unit 22 allows Unlimited Bull late Oct, forkie Muley & Bear Controlled Draw = 1 out of 3. However, Unit 23 allows Bull, Antlered Muley & Bear, starting mid Oct = 3 out 3. That is the mixed bag opportunity I'm after - been on ID F&G Hunt Planner, Google Earth, & mapping out Unit 23.
Challenge: Gotta convince the group - 23 offers the trophy mixed bag over 22 & the little extra effort i.e. hiking in would be worth it! Unit 23 has allot less road access than 22, that is a good thing for the hiking hunter, distance from road to spike camp must be realistic for healthy 50-yrs.
Greatly appreciate - a "good starting point" for me to continue my mapping/planning. Did ping an e-mail to the ID F&G office for SW Region, similar req. for starting point, no response. They probably receive 100's of those e-mail annually from Non-Res.
Thanks in advance!
